There are few regions in Minnesota that have the number of lakes as the Brainerd Lakes Area. Located within 2 1/2 hours of Minneapolis MN, the Brainerd Lakes region has become a favorite weekend destination for many people living in the Twin Cities. Like many of the natural lakes in Minnesota, the lakes in Brainerd were created by glaciers during the last ice age. But unlike the prairie lakes of the southern Minnesota, where the glaciers deposits created soft muddy bottoms, most of Brainerd’s lakes were craved out. Removing most of the regions top soil, thus creating lake bottoms that primarily  comprised of sandy, gravel, or rocky, bottoms. The Brainerd Lakes region contains some of Minnesota’s most spectacular beaches. Much of the lakeshore in the Brainerd Lakes area is a combination of fine grain sands.
